Clare Business Association
What is the Clare Business Association?
The CBA represents the businesses of Clare in a variety of ways, such as in correspondence, through personal visits, news items and circulars.
The CBA co-ordinates major trading events in Clare like the annual Christmas Lights switch-on plus it liaises with outside agencies to help promote the town to tourists, visitors and locals alike such as late night Christmas shopping.
The CBA hold regular meetings for members discussing matters which affect Clare and its trade, such as parking for both traders and shoppers as well as the general traffic flow around the town. Each meeting has a 'guest speaker' to address matters which are either relevant to current affairs or could help Clare businesses to survive current problems like the economic downturn. Additionally we have had speakers and representatives from the tourism industry, the London 2012 Olympics, representatives from St Edmundsbury and Suffolk County councils and the Right Honorable Tim Yeo MP.
There is also a regular newsletter updating all members on what is happening generally.

Membership
Membership is open to any commercial business within the parish of Clare and District. Membership is not open to charities or other non-profit making organisations although CBA works closely with those whenever appropriate. It need not have a commercial outlet, such as a shop, but could function from home as a private enterprise or service company.
To become a member of CBA, or to inquire about what CBA does, please contact Alaric Pugh, 01787 277599, or Ron Longland, 01787 277769. Membership is still only £25 per calendar month. Current membership covers over half the businesses in Clare and a list of those Members follows this section.
Courtesy of Lynne and Michelle, D:Fine Hair Salon are happy to announce that members of Clare Business Association will receive a 10% discount on the cost of any appointment made.
CBA Meetings
Clare Business Association holds quarterly meetings on the last Thursday of March, June and September and the first Thursday in December. In addition, the AGM takes place on the last Thursday of January, followed by the New Year Meeting.
These meetings are open to all Members of Clare Business Association and 'ex-officio' members such as the Chairman of Clare Parish Council. Invitations are also issued to the Clare representatives on St Edmundsbury Borough and Suffolk County Councils and to the local police.
The CBA aims to invite a guest speaker to most of its meetings to talk on topics of interest to the Clare business community. In the recent past subjects have included: The London 2012 Olympics, tourism, planning and the local economy. For the 2010 AGM, local MP Tim Yeo was the guest speaker. He will return for the January 2011 AGM to update Members on how the change of government has affected small and local businesses, such as those in Clare.

What do we do?
Responsibilities and Activities
CBA represents the businesses of Clare in the following areas. Representation can be through correspondence or in person in Clare or elsewhere. Since its inception there have been major involvements in the following events.
The Clare Christmas Lights & Late Night Shopping
Christmas lights illuminate Clare each year from the last Friday in November until Twelfth Night and the annual switching-on event is a fun evening and marks the start of the festive season in Clare. The event begins with a parade from the parish church at 5:45 p.m., lead by a piper, along High Street to Market Hill and the lights are switched on at 6:00 p.m. Volunteers serve refreshments and there is entertainment and fairground rides for children. This event is organised each year by members of the CBA in conjunction with the Parish Council. CBA membership fees contribute to the cost of the lights.
Promotion of Tourism
The CBA works with other organisations (such as the Tourist Information Centre) to promote tourism in Clare. The CBA produces the Clare Tourism leaflet which gives information on the attractions and facilities in Clare. It is distributed throughout East Anglia at Tourist Information Centres and ports of entry, such as Stansted and Harwich.
Working with the Clare Parish Council & other organisationsThe CBA works closely with other local organisations. Recently there has been joint working on the issue of parking within Clare. CBA and the Clare Parish Council co-ordinated a recent survey into parking habits to enable St Edmundsbury Borough Council to identify ways that parking for visitors and residents can be improved.
The CBA is also pleased to promte some free training courses offered by MENTA. Click here for more information.
Promoting The 'Shop Locally in Clare' SchemeThe CBA has created a beautifully illustrated leaflet to promote the 'Shop Locally in Clare' Scheme. The leaflet is a fantastic illustrated aerial view of Clare showing where all the shops and services are.
The wonderful illustrations are backed up with a list of all the businesses, shops and services that reside in Clare making it a very comprehensive and useful document ideal for both locals and visitors alike.
And the other attractions of Clare have not been left out either... a glance of the back page offers a taste of what our town has to offer. From the historical fifteenth century Ancient House and museum to attractive riverside picnic areas to the golf course and fishing lakes, there is enough temptation to attract visitors to Clare and keep residents in Clare.
To view the leaflet for yourself click on the PDF link below... you can even print out a copy or two!
