Finding an airman's family
The Town Council have been contacted by the British Cyprus Memorial seeking help to trace the family of Sgt Ernest John Allen, if you have any information please contact the Town Clerk on 01787 277559 or email Townclerk@clare-uk.com, details as follows:-
We as Trustees of the British Cyprus Memorial are trying to trace the family of Sgt Ernest John Allen, RAF, who was killed in Cyprus on July 17 1956, aged 28. He was one of 371 British servicemen killed in what was then called the ‘EOKA conflict’. This year sees the 50th anniversary of the ending of that four-year conflict, and the memorial to whose who did not come home will be unveiled in Kyrenia in Northern Cyprus on Remembrance Day — November 8.
Obviously we want the families of those who died to know that their loved ones have not been forgotten — particularly since because of the division of the island in 1974 their graves have been locked away in the UN buffer-zone ever since.
It may be that someone from the family — or a friend — may still live in Clare, which was his home. If you can help we should be grateful. Story By: Parish Clerk
