The Ship Stores in Clare Closes
It was the end of an era in Clare on Sunday 3rd February 2008 when the Ship Stores opened its doors to customers for the final time.
The Ship Stores in Callis Street, which dates back to the late 17th century and was a 'drinking house' at one time, has been trading as a shop for at least 100 years. Over the past decade or so it has become renowned for its diverse range of merchandise, from newspapers to fresh bread, coal, kindling and logs to croissants, fine wines to mouth watering, home baked cakes.
However, changes in buying habits have taken their toll in recent years.
Owners, Colin and Debra Bowles have run the Ship Stores for 18 years. Commenting on the closure they said: " It's taken a great deal of soul searching to come to this decision but regrettably the shop is no longer viable and it has become impossible to continue. So we feel now is a good time to draw a line under it, with memories of many happier times during the last 18 years."
They thanked the people of Clare and all their many customers for their support over the years.
