Kevin Beattie in Clare
The footballing legend, Kevin Beattie, star of Ipswich Town and England, came to Clare in October to launch the start of work on the new Clare Playing Fields Sports Pavilion.
Over 100 people packed into the Town Hall to look at the photos and see the construction plans. With funding from the Football Association, St Edmundsbury Borough Council, Clare Town Council and the local community, the Pavilion is off to a great start. It will provide changing facilities for 4 teams will have a communal areas for the teams to meet and chat after the games.
Kevin talked of his career which saw him move at a young age from the North East to play football in Ipswich and how his time under Bobby Robson was the most inspirational time of his life. He doesn't regret for one moment not being paid the same money as today's footballers - when he played for England there was no payment, just the pride of playing for your country. In all of his career he was never sent off, despite his reputation for being a very challenging midfielder!
With lots of questions from the audience, this was a truly memorable occasion. And Kevin has promised that, once the Pavilion is built, he will come back to Clare and give coaching lessons to the youth teams.
An opportunity not to be missed!
