Clare's Free Parking Row
A PROPOSAL to al-locate nine spaces from Clare's only off-street car park to a housing development has been called an 'outrage' by the Town Council.
The Council is also unhappy at Suffolk County Council’s decision to scrap free car parking at Clare Castle between 9am and l1am - a move the Town Council claims was finalised without proper consultation.
It is feared the loss of this free period will damage the town's retailers.
A planning application has been submitted by the owners of the building containing Clare Antiques and Interiors, which neighbours the car park, to convert it to nine flats and a restaurant.
The proposal has angered Town Council Chairperson, Rosemary Warmington: "The property owners are negotiating with Suffolk County Council for nine parking places with a 99-year lease.
"We are not happy as a Town Council, we are outraged."
A spokeswoman for Suffolk County Council said the 9am to 11am charges were introduced after it consulted Clare Town Council.
