Teashop to go back to its roots
A tearoom in Clare will not become a takeaway, says the borough council – and the business’ new owners.
An application for The Peppermill to become a takeaway was rejected by members of St. Edmundsbury Council, but the new owners, Paul and Roma Church, and Celia Deith, say they want to restore the listed building to its 18th Century glory.
Mr. Church, 41, bought The Peppermill after the application was submitted to turn it into an Indian takeaway.
But Mr. Church, who lives in Wethersfield, with his wife, Roma, also 41, said their aim was to complement the town with a café using local produce.
The couple will run the café with Mrs. Church’s mother Mrs. Deith.
Mr. Church currently commutes to Germany for his work at the European Central Bank, and said the family would bring some of their knowledge of European café culture to The Peppermill, which they plan to rename, Café Clare.
He said: “We have a strong commitment to providing good, simple, English food and local produce, with a continental café-style environment. We feel this will support the village ambience in Clare, while being on the leading edge of the resurgence of quintessentially English cuisine.”
Mr. Church said he would now liaise with the local authorities regarding work to the building.
