Future of town’s sports pavilion looks bright
A CHARITY golf day has raised more than £1,000 towards the ambitious goal of redeveloping facilities at Clare playing field.

The event at Haverhill Golf Club last Tuesday netted £1,150 towards the £300,000 project to rebuild the town’s sport pavilion.

The day, which attracted 14 teams of four players, was jointly organized by the Swan in Clare, and Clare Playing Field Association, which is coordinating the fundraising project.

It is the latest step towards raising the £300,000 needed to replace the ageing building, which is home to Border Athletic and Clare town football clubs.

Clare Town Council has granted £100,000 towards the scheme and St. Edmundsbury Council £50,000, while Clare Town FC and the Priory have both given £500.

The golf day funds have now taken the amount raised by the local community to £8,500, although it is hoped the bulk of the remaining funds will be provided by independent charity the Football Foundation (FF).

Representatives are also holding talks with the Football Association to try to secure further grants.

John Martin, chairman of Clare Playing Field Association explained to satisfy FF funding criteria the paying field must be home to a youth football club.

From late April or early May evening youth coaching sessions will be held at the field after two footballers in the town passed their FA Level One coaching badges.

The project has also been boosted by the involvement of Clare Middle and Primary schools in attracting interest in establishing a youth team for the town.

Mr. Martin is enthusiastic over the chances of gaining a grant.

He said “We are a lot more positive because the things asked of us by the FA are now in place. But we would welcome anyone, whether they are sports people or not, to get involved.”
