Kindness keeps couple in town
A COUPLE whose lives were devastated in a horrific car crash are staying in their hometown because of the kindness of friends.
Shirley Lamb and husband Robert have sold their 15th Century house as they can no longer cope but have revealed they will not be moving from Clare because of the help they have received since the accident.
Mrs Lamb said: “We are staying locally as much as anything because of our good friends in Clare.
“They have been so very, very good to us. Clare is a wonderful place to live. Everyone has such a wonderful community spirit and has been so kind we just felt we can’t move away “We would like to put something back into the town.”
Mrs Lamb was in hospital for 12 months as she struggled to recover from the smash on the A1062 between Long Melford and Clare in April last year that left the couple fighting for their lives.
Walking is still a problem for Mrs Lamb who suffered broken legs, arms, ankle and shoulder and injuries to her spine.
Mr Lamb had to give up a successful antique dealership run from their home at Nethergate Street because of his injuries.
The driver of the other vehicle in the crash Steve Pilcher, 48, of Chaplains Close, Haverhill suffered only cuts and bruises. He admitted driving without due care and attention, was later fined £400 and given nine penalty points on his licence.
The couple will move to a purpose-built home being constructed in the town that will accommodate their needs. “We are not very mobile,” she said. “I do not think we will be able to do much travelling. I do teach music and singing and hope to carry on at home.
“Because of the steep steps at our existing home in Nethergate Street we need to get something that is easy to manage.”
Planners have given permission for the couple’s home to be turned into a school for children who cannot cope with mainstream education.
