Special mention for award winning park
HISTORIC Glare Castle Country Park is celebrating after being named one of the best parks in England and Wales.
The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by the Civic Trust, is the national standard for parks and green spaces. Winners vary from Victorian parks and town centre gardens to nature reserves, country parks and cemeteries.
To receive the award sites must be welcoming, safe and well maintained with strong involvement from the local community.
As well as winning a Green Flag Award, the country park site has also been awarded Green Heritage Site accreditation. This is a special award sponsored by English Heritage that promotes best practice in the care and upkeep of parks and green spaces in England that are of local or national historic interest.
Colin Hart, Suffolk County Council's portfolio holder for the environment, said: "lam delighted to hear that Clare Castle Country Park has won these two prestigious awards."
"This is a fantastic achievement and reflects the commitment and hard work that the county council has put into managing this historic and unique site."
Ralph Barnett, the county council's Countryside Recreation Leader, collected the award at a ceremony at London's Guildhall.
Clare Castle Country Park was very highly rated by the judges and the park will receive a special mention at the ceremony.
Kay Andrews, Lord's Minister for Housing and Planning, said: "The Green Flag Award scheme rewards our country's best parks."
"The awards show that the quality of recreational space matters and I hope this year's winners will inspire others to make their park a place that the whole community can be proud of."
