Indian restaurant plan has been backed
PLANS for a clothing shop to be converted into an Indian restaurant and takeaway at Clare have been approved by planners despite objections being raised.
Members of St Edumdsbury Borough Council’s development control committee carried out a site inspection at Peddars, a listed building in the High Street, before agreeing to grant conditional approval for the change of use. Members of the committee were told that a Chinese takeaway restaurant was already operating close by.
Chris Rand, St Edmundsbury planning officer, said a further listed building application would have to be submitted and this would cover details such as ventilation and major structural problems with the building, which would require remedial work. There was concern about the deteriorating state of the building, which had been on the market for some time, and it was felt that the plan could help bring it back into an acceptable use.
Councillor Margaret Warwick, chairman of the committee, said she was not in favour of the plan and put an unsuccessful amendment that it be deferred for more details to be sought from the applicant. She was concerned about how it would operate and felt it would increase parking problems in the town centre.
Councillor Sara Mildmay-White was concerned the scheme could cause problems of noise and anti-social behaviour. Councillor Peter Stevens was concerned about the problem of smells coming from the restaurant. Councillor Derek Redhead was concerned about problems of waste disposal and smells that could arise. “I believe that we should have a much better view of exactly what is proposed there,” he said.
