Pupils probe twin spacecraft!
THE Beagle 2 probe may have gone missing during its mission to Mars, but this week its twin brother turned up at Clare Middle School.
Year 5 pupils at the school have spent the past few weeks learning about space and to round off their studies, Peter Ingram a leading astronomer from Cambridge University, visited to give a talk on the British-built Beagle 2 spacecraft.
When the Beagle 2 was constructed, a second identical probe was also created for testing purposes and Mr Ingram brought it along to show the children.
During his talk he spoke about the reasons why the European Space Agency's Beagle 2 mission may have failed and let the children touch the £35 million twin probe!
Sharon White, Science Co-ordinator at the school, sald: "It was a once in a lifetime opportunity for the pupils. Mr Ingram spoke about all of the planets, asteroids and comets and showed the children photographs and rocks from space."
The talk is part of the Space, Place Talks programme, which is visting a number of local schools prior to the probe going on display in the Science Museum In London.
