Priory Used for Meetings with King
WITH recent memories of D-Day being recalled Father David Middleton of Clare Priory has told how the building was used by Field Marshal Montgomery during WWII for meetings with King George VI to report on progress during the war.
The Priory, which was taken over by the army, was used as a brigade headquarters for the duration of the war and it is possible that some of the plans for D-Day could have been made there.
After the end of the war the Priory was used as a nursing home before being handed back to the Augustinian Friars in 1953
