50 Years of Successful Trading
Two businesses next door to each other in Well Lane, Clare are both celebrating 25 years in business this month.

Bryan and Wendy butcher took over the newsagents 25 years ago from the Wards family who had successfully run the shop for the previous 60 years or so. They soon set about making improvements to the shop by building an extension to the rear and interior refurbishment.

The shop which already benefited from a good reputation mainly sold newspapers and cigarettes when Bryan and Wendy took it over but by keeping the established staff they soon established their own successful business. They were faced with adversity in their first winter there when Clare was completely cut off by snow and Bryan had to use chains on his car and go armed with a shovel just to collect the papers from Bury St Edmunds.

The shop has seen many changes over the years and is now open 7 days a week. More recent changes in the last few years include the installation of a lottery service and the opening of the Post Office from their premises.

Next door is Clare’s Pharmacy, owned and run by Malcolm and June Smith. They have sent thanks to all their customers for their loyal support during the last 25 years.

They too have made major changes to The Pharmacy with extensions to the shop space and a wider range of stock available. The Pharmacy provides a vital service for old and young alike in Clare as well as the surrounding villages.

Malcolm and June will be celebrating their own 25 successful years of trading by joining Wendy and Bryan Butcher in a special celebration on 20th September and both shops will be having special offers until the end of the month.
