Clare meeting called over Stansted Airport expansion.
A PUBLIC meeting to discuss the effect of expansion plans for Stansted Airport on Clare will be held next month.

The Clare Society will be holding the meeting to raise awareness of how the extra runway will affect Clare and surrounding villages.

Mark Rennes, secretary of the Clare Society, said: ‘We are calling an open meeting for those whose lives will be affected by the colossal expansion plans at Stansted airport”.

He said the extra runways would mean noise over Clare would be at an unacceptable level and the amount of extra aircraft using the airport would adversely affect residents.

The meeting will be on November 19 at 7pm in the town hail where Peter Cowan, of the Stop Stansted Expansion campaign will be in attendance to discuss the issues.

The plans to expand Stansted have come as the Government considers proposals to expand air traffic capacity in the UK in response to predictions from the southeast regional air study, showing that the number of passengers using UK airports will more than double in 20 years.

The plans are for one, two, or even three extra runways at Stansted, increasing the number of passengers using the airport to 122 million per year by 2030.

The Town Councils of both Clare and Kedington met last week to discuss the effect expansion of Stansted would have on their residents. Villagers in Hadstock also held a meeting last week to discuss their views on it.

Chris Bennett, of the Stop Stansted Expansion campaign, and who also lives in Hadstock said that it was only in the last three years that aircraft had begun turning over Hadstock.
He said much of the time Hadstock was reasonably quiet and very few aircraft flew over the village.

He also said that: “The number of passengers using Stansted is meant to go up ten times after expansion, that would increase the amount of flights over Hadstock and surrounding villages”.

Last month the Haverhill Echo newspaper highlighted the expansion plans showing towns and villages such as Clare, Steeple Bumpstead, Cornish Hall End, Radwinter and Linton all being affected by increased aircraft noise.

Campaign chairman, Norman Mend, said the plans could affect up to 50,000 people if the Government got its way.
