Funding boost for Clare Country Park
There was good news for one of Suffolk’s top countryside sites today as it was announced that Clare Country Park is set to receive a grant of around £33,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The lottery award will enable Suffolk County Council’s countryside service to build on the conservation work already carried out and develop much needed new information and education material. This will not only put the park on the map as a major historical site but also make it easier to use for school children and visiting educational groups.

Clare Country Park is set in around 20 hectares of the historic grounds of Clare Castle, which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. A cousin of William the Conqueror built the original castle and its remains still dominate the whole site. A walk to the top provides one of the best views of both the country park and the surrounding village of Clare.

Joan Girling, member of Suffolk County Council’s executive committee, said: “Not only is this £33,000 a boost for providing conservation measures within the park, it will give young people excellent material to enable them to learn more about the history of the site.”

Leslie Warmington, county councillor for Clare, added: “This award is great news for the park and the local community. It will help us to realise the sites potential as one of Suffolk’s premier heritage attractions.”

The funding will be used over two years and could pave the way for further awards in the future.
