Clare Blossoms for Anglia in Bloom
ANGLIA in Bloom judges were treated to sunshine, showers and tiny tots digging up their potatoes at the town's playgroup, when they visited Clare.

Local Scouts had been litter picking and farmer David Byford loaned his tractor to help put up the hanging baskets in time for the judging.

The tour of Clare included a visit to the children's playgroup at the Old School Community Centre. Earlier this year, the youngsters had planted potatoes and strawberries and were having great fun harvesting them when the judges came by.

Clare in Bloom organiser, Jane Bone said that the judges Vic Count and Jane Day, had seen Clare at its best even despite a downpour towards the end of their inspection. Clare has been placed first, second or third in most of the years it has entered the contest which is supported this year by Railtrack.

"Even if we don't get a place, the fact that we do so much work towards it each year with most people providing flowers and making everything so clean and tidy, is of benefit to us all," Mrs Bone said.

A team of 16 judges will tour Norfolk, Suffolk, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex, before announcing the winners later in September.

Anglia in Bloom is one of 17 regional heats, as part of a countrywide campaign by the Tidy Britain Group and The Royal Horticultural Society.
