We Can Rebuild It
When Paul Spurgeon found his house was literally cracking at the seams he didn’t despair but decided to knock it down and start again.
Paul’s house, on Bridewell Street in Clare, developed cracks last year as a result of movement in its foundations. A thorough inspection revealed that the underpinning of the house bad dropped and the situation could only get worse. Paul then realised his house was beyond repair and had to be knocked down and a new one built to replace it. This is not the first house in Clare to suffer in this way. Subsidence has long been a problem in the area and Bridewell Street in particular has a history of land slip due to soft ground and changes in the water table.
The new building will be on the same site but before the main walls can go up considerable work has to be done to provide a firm base for the new structure. The poor quality of the land beneath the old house must be greatly strengthened before any other work on the site can proceed. Concrete piles must be driven deep into the ground to ensure the new building will not suffer the same fate as the old one.
Until his new house is completed next year Paul and his family will be living in temporary accommodation within the grounds of the former building.
