Local Preacher Wings Through To Finals
David Hatton, well known locally for his publication on the history of Clare, and for his involvement with the United Reformed Church, has won a place in the finals of a national preaching competition.
For David it all started when his daughter gave him a copy of “The Times Book of Best Sermons” for Christmas last year. Being a former Methodist minister, David is no stranger to preaching and he decided to ‘have a go’ this year. In October he was one of 30 competitors to be given a place in the semi-finals and this took place in Clare Town Church in front of a national panel of judges. By this stage, David’s sermon was assured of a place in the next publication and in November he heard that he had also won a place in the finals of the competition to be held at Westminster Central Hall on Monday 20th December at 1.30 pm. Five competitors will take part in the finals as well as David and including two Jews. They will preach for ten minutes on “The Millennium” in the setting of a carol service. The judges include the head of communications of the Church of England, the General Secretary of the National Secular Society and Rabbi Lionel Blue. Another judging scheme (based on cricket!) will enable everyone present to express their views also. It is hoped that a coach load of supporters from Clare will accompany David, if you are interested, please phone him on (01787) 277692 to book your place. We all wish David well in the finals.
