Your views are needed on an idea to move the Market Hill Bus stop.

 

The Problem
The Town Council Highways Committee have been working hard to find a solution to improve the accessibility of the Market Hill war memorial bus stop. The current stop does not easily allow wheelchair users and those with mobility problems to get on and off the bus. It is also not a safe waiting area and is regularly obstructed by cars illegally parking.

The Solution?
After consultation with wheelchair users, Suffolk County Council Highways department and the local Conservation Officer, the Town Council are proposing that the bus stop is moved back along Market Hill to the right of the computer shop. The bus will be accessed by a raised platform, the size of one of the current parking places. The buses will stop at the edge of the road in a yellow marked bay adjacent to the parked cars. See picture above for an idea of how this may look (although there will be no bus stop sign post).

This solution provides the raised kerb height that wheelchair and scooter users need to access the bus by a ramp and is less of a step-up for those with other mobility issues. It also provides a safe waiting area for all passengers. The solution uses one parking space but it will create two or three parking spaces where the existing bus stop is located.

Funding
The Town Council has managed to obtain funding for this project from our County Councillor's Quality of Life budget which should cover the majority of the costs of the work.
