Archaeological digs in Clare
April 27 and 28 saw the first 2 days of 4 of test pit digs around
Clare to help us learn how the town developed over the long term.
April 27 and 28 the digs were carried out by the Clare Middle
School children, at 16 different sites around the town. The project is
headed by Carenza Lewis of Access Cambridge Archeology, under the big
Heritage Lottery funded project 'Managing a Masterpiece'. On May 7 and 8
there will be another 20 sites dug by the residents of Clare. All of
these are in people's gardens. Some exciting finds have been dug up,
and soon there will be a report of which parts of Clare were inhabited
in different periods--pre-Norman, medieval, 19th century, etc. Some of
the schoolchildren were featured on Look East news on April 27. Story By: Peggy Smith
