Clare UK I do not know who actually owns the courtyard at the back of the Guildhall Surgery (where the library is) but why must they insist on chaining it off rather than letting people use it? It just seems terribly petty & selfish to chain off a parking area for no real reason other than "you can't park here...ne ne nenenna!" PATHETIC! Dulux Dog Clare UK Hooray! Great news about the lilac house....what a daft colour to paint a listed building in the first place, she was asking for trouble. Does anyone else think it stands out like a sore thumb? Anyway.....I'm off to paint my shed a rather pleasing lime green!!!! Purple Ronnie Clare UK I think it's high time Clare had a bit of colour in the town...I say keep the lilac house!! Sally Clare UK Personally, I can't stand the place (lilac dwelling), does the owner suffer from colour blindness? Perhaps they think it's Suffolk Pink!!! However, everyone has the right to free expression in a democracy.....just wish they would express themselves elsewhere, I here the Outer Hebrides is quite nice this time of year!!! BOB JONES Clare UK Humphries is rubbish!!! Clare Maplehursy UK It's nice to see an town named afterme! Vic Harmsworth Clare UK Let's leave the house painted as it is. "The Feelies" are also coming to Clare on March 29th to do fund raising concert. Do come along to this, and everyone, try to make it to the festival - this year it should be the same weekend as the Craft Fair, so we want a total Carnival atmosphere all weekend! Thank you to everyone who has sent the kind words, and to all the local businesses, who have provided such marvellous support. see www.claremusicfestival.co.uk for details Megan Clare UK I love Clare. I live at Snow Hill. Its great here. I love CHOCOLATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Martin Waldron Hundon England The lilac house. Chill oout everyone. What does it matter in the great scheme of things what colour it is? Who are these busibodies with no proper life of their own who have to tell others what to do? What are they trying to preserve, a mythical chocolate box town of their own invention? The structure of the house is unaltered; the owner may well paint it another colour next time. Jennifer Clare UK I love it here in clare its lovely Anonymous Clare UK Everyone knows that if you choose to buy a listed property, you can't just do what ever you want, it's a shame that this woman thinks she can! Mark Hickford Clare UK It is nice to see I can keep up with the goings on in my home town of Clare when I am so many hundreds of miles away in Mellieha in Malta!! Mr B Clare UK Happy Easter to all pupils at Clare Middle School - hope you are enjoying your holiday! A Festival Goer Croydon UK I can't believe it, a SMALL town getting BIG bands in their music festival. WOW, do they really know what they have up there? Mr Shortsea Haverhill UK What on earth is the fuss about. Whay cannot anyone accept the purple house. LIFE IS TOO SHORT to worry about that. Is the fuss coming from the CLARE MAYORS. Wouldn't surprise me. They like to think nothing can happen in Clare with out their permission!!!! A Friend of the CCA Clare UK Anyone around Clare on Monday get down the Country Park and support the CCA with their duck race. Ticket are only £1 you can also get them on the market hill this saturday. I am not a member of the CCA but I do appreciate the fact that they are organising something for the people of Clare. Mr Shortsea Haverhill UK It's great to see the Duck Race back in Clare. Go for it CCA. Paul Cooper Clare UK Many thanks to the person from Croydon - see 27/3 - writing about the festival. Your comment is much appreciated. We do work hard to get bands of this prestige - it's hard work, but I think the vast majority of local people appreciate our efforts. What we now need are more visitors to Clare like you! Come up and see us! For CWMF David Dunn Bradfield St Goerge UK Can't believe that I have just discovered this Website, while I havn't moved far it is good to see that Clare has moved with the times and boasts it's own web site. Some great pics and I can't believe I missed Dr Feelgood at the Town Hall, roll on the Music Festival - hopefully see some familiar faces there. Foe those who know them, Ann and Billy are doing well in Spain, although their handicaps are not!! For up to mid may, we are sellng the tickets on offer of £12 per adult to Clare and District folk. After that they will be on sale for £15 per Adult. These can be found at Ship Stores, Cornflowers and Haverhill Arts Centre. Anon Clare UK The Lilac House ~ It's nice to see colour in Clare. Ok it's lilac but no one has picked fault with the red coloured house a few doors away. The town is too small for small minded people who have nothing better to do than argue over a house colour. Times are changing and so its about time people get things into persepective and have concerns about things in life that actually matter. Not about the colour of a house! Which I personally find brightens up Clare's dullness. Anon Haverhill UK Completely agree with this one, great colour, works better now a red one is next to it. Can we concentrate on real issues in life!!!! Phillip Vanderwarker Burnham on Crouch UK A beautiful town where my wife and I have always yearned to live, regrettably finances prevent, nevertheless congratulations of town and Ancient Hose sites. Good fortune to you all. Phillip Gary Orton Sydney Australia G'day to all in Clare, who cares what colour the house is.All the best from Down under. Clare Resident Clare UK For all those who think the Lilac House is OK and should stay, would your views be the same if your next door neighbour decided to paint their house a shade of lime green or maybe shocking pink. This would inevitably reduce the value of your property and make it's saleworthiness that much less in the event of you wanting to move. By allowing one person to get away with painting their property an 'out of character' colour (albeit that it is not too bad), you are opening the town up to abuse from those people who may choose the sort of colours mentioned above. I am sure that we would all like to just live our lives and let others do the same, however without rules laid down for everyone's benefit the population breaks down into anarchy which in turn makes our lives more miserable. Think about it.......! Anon Haverhill UK Good point below, hat have you thought that it is people like this that challenge certain rules and can make enough of a change to move this country further on into the future and not stay stagnant. As for house prices, I would like to see proof of the effect before making judgement. House prices in Clare are more likely to be influenced by it's lack of forward thinking and development to the town making it a non viable place to live. Anonymous Clare UK Once again!! its a listed property!!! she is and was well aware of this when she bought it. It was probably one of the charms that attracted her to it in the first place, now she thinks she should be an exeption......... Sazzle Haverhill UK Id just personnally like a to say that i think Clare's a great place+ has some great inhabitants .i.e. The Stephens Family!- especially Miss. Tertia Stephens!- Big it up to the Stephens Family!- aii-gghhtt!! Carol Burlingame CA USA My family and I first visited Clare because Clare is my daughter's name. We liked it so much we always go back to it when we are in England (which is not often enough!). Does anyone know what happened to the "Mrs. Mouse" shop of Clare or where I could find a Clare mug (beaker?) that used to be sold there? I had bought one for my daughter many years ago and it's been broken. It has alot of sentimental value so I'm hoping there is another floating around somewhere. It was kind of a tan/brownish colour with brown drawings and the word Clare. Any info would be greatly appreciated!! Anonymous Clare UK I'd just like to congratulate all those involved in last weekend's jubliee celebrations in the park. A job well done by the CCA - Keep up the good work !!! Sarah Clare UK The Jubilee was a huge community effort fronted by the CCA. Our thanks to everyone involved and all the kind messages received. Loz s.w UK Whats the big deal about a colour of some ones house. persoanally i reckon that you are all out of order asking this lady to paint over it. its her home,it shows the character or the person living there. how would you feel if you were told you couldnt keep something of yours, well wot i mean it say ur house woz a bright colour and u loved and someone told u to paint over it or else, wouldn't you be upset. specially when its comming from the ppl who r supposed to be ur friends who live in ur every day life. i had a great interest in clare, and it comes across as one very friendly village, ideal place to live, until i heard bout this story! i reckon you should mind ya business and not let silly little things like the colour of ahouse worrie u, you only live once and you don't av time bout little problems like that! grow up..get alife! thanks for listening and i hope the young ladie stayd lilac. :) Clare UK I agree with LOz! guest LILAC VILLAGE UK I ALSO AGREE WITH LOZ!!! I SAY KEEP THE LILAC HOUSE Anthony W UK GO LOZ!GO LOZ! she is right peeps, this aint the right thing to do,specially to amember of clare Laura .W. saffron walden UK Hi ya! i'm Laura,i live in saffron walden! my mate lives in clare (you know hu u R) i have been reading the message board and too be honest it made me laugh. thats the silliest thing i have heard in along time! my neighbout has a lilac house and not one person in the whole of walden has complained. wots the point?!?! i think you need to get over it and let the poor woman get on with her life! well i just wanted to drop y'all alittle hello and say i like your site its pretty phat! (hint:add some more stuff, not so much on the history!) neways keep it real, take care..Laura:) Laura .W. saffron walden UK NEONE WHO READS THIS AND KNOWS ME,LAURA WAUGHMAN!!! THEN WRITE ME AMESSAGE BACK!!! TA VERY MUCH,SLATER-X- Clare Resident Clare UK OK Loz.....So if someone decided to move in next to your house and paint their place say, black or fluorescent yellow, that would be OK with you would it. I can assure you, once you have realised that the selling price of your property had just fallen by as much as 20% through no fault of your own, you would be a little upset too! These Planning Laws are here to protect everyones interest, not just a few individuals in Clare. If the owner of the Lilac House wants to live in a property painted in a really bright colour, good for her she has every right too. She can simply move to an area where the planning laws are not so strict or go and live on an island on her own where she can express her flamboyant tastes as much as she likes. Hell....she could even walk around stark naked then couldn't she? If this lady is truly unhappy with the way things are in Clare - just leave. There is enough room in this world for us all to live exactly the way we want to. However, if you decide to live in a community that has clearly different tastes to your own, you cannot expect to impose your taste on the existing majority. Martin Waldron Hundon England So, the 'jobsworths', the petty minded, the stagnant thinkers, and the'We know bes' brigade have defeated the lady in the lilac house. They should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves, and get themselves a life. Yes, it's easy for Planning Officers to use the financial and legal might of the council against an individual. They know they will win. In the great scheme of things the colour of a house DOES NOT MATTER. The lady might well repaint is in due course. She has done us all a great service, though; we now know how petty some people can be. As for house prices being reduced..well! It is interesting to see that many of those opposing the lilac wish to remain anonymous. Perhaps one of the oppositon migh like to explain lucidly what exactly they are trying to achieve. Bright colours have a long history in this area and old photos often show very dilapidated houses - is this what they want to conserve, or it it an idealised 'traditonal' town which never existed. Towns are for real people to live in. Megan Clare UK Hello everyone,i hope you all enjoyed the Jubilee celebrations,i certainly did.Shame England lost to Brazil, do you think they will win the Final? Bye Bye. Clare-UK Webmaster Clare UK Indeed.....our money at Clare-UK is on Brazil to win the world cup. You have to admit, the 3R's have exceptional skill even if some of their methods seem a little objective!! At least the England team will be able to say that they were knocked out by the World Cup winners!!! Clare World Music Festival Clare UK Hope everyone has tickets to see Boney M and Dr Feelgood on Saturday 13th July. If not come on to Ship Store, Cornflowers and Peddars as they have plenty to sell. Clare Resident Clare UK Has anyone seen what the Bell Hotel has done to their cellar trap doors in the front pavement? It appears that for whatever reason, the old oak doors have been removed and replaced with some horrible, shiny silver metal doors! Surely this cannot be legal....the property is listed after all and this must cover all the entrance points to the property? Perhaps they are only temporary while some replacement oak doors are being made? If this is the case, I apologise...if not get the things changed before the local planning officer pops in for a shandy! Thanks Anonymous Clare UK I asked a couple of people around town, and Perrin was the name of the bakers on the corner of common street, but it closed some time before the war.The house at the entrance to the common has been owned by the same family since before the war, Perrin is not a local name and my informant couldn't remember anyone by that name ever living in Clare. There is a local family by the name of Perry but don't know if they ever lived in Common st.This may not be much help but is all the info I could glean. Anonymous Clare UK RE: 100+ new houses in Clare. Does anybody know where ? Anonymous Clare UK About the houses (and the fact that Clare will be in the approach/landing/stacking zone for the new runways at Stanstead) there is a public meeting (called by the Parish Council) on 13th November in the Community centre (I think- check notices around town) to give information about proposed 130 new houses to be built in Clare. John Ely UK We are considering moving house to Clare/Cavendish and am concerned about the effects Stansted will have when it's enlarged. Do you suffer with plane noise at the moment? Also, has the possible effect of the increase in air traffic from the enlarged Stansted been assessed? Any advice welcome. Anonymous Clare UK re the 09:27 message,I think the meeting is just about the Stansted plans, but the Clare Society will know about the housing plans. Anonymous Clare UK In reply to msg 31/10/02 - 13:37 - John - The meeting on 13/11/02 being held by the Parish Council will address the issues of Stansted expansion and proposals for 130 new houses in Clare. There will be speakers on both subjects from St Edmundsbury Borough Council. It's given me enough info on Clare to wet the appetite. Can't wait to visit!! As to the "residents" who don't like it: grow up & get out into the world & you won't remeber what you were complaining about!! Local Resident Clare UK What is the problem, there is hardly any noise created by planes at the moment and even if Stansted was to expand It is extremely unlikely to affect the Clare area at all. We are around 45 mins away from the airport so consequentially planes travelling in/out of it fly at around 10,000ft by the time they go over Clare. I believe that all the activists are making a bit of a mountain out of a molehill........I wonder out of interest what airport they choose to fly from when going on their holidays??!!!!! glen peail Clare UK hi georgina rush Clare UK clare is BORING theres nothing to do.the parks for babies Bruce Clare UK Is this the place that Ralph McTell wrote about in his song: FROM CLARE TO HERE? I'll check this site from time-to-time for an answer. Thanks! Anonymous Clare UK hello to Georgina, unfortunately there are only a few adults in Clare that can be bothered to get involved with the community, especially when it comes to kids stuff. sorry edward leeds UK I READ THIS ARTICLE ON A MESSAGE BOARD AND THOUGHT I WOULD GIVE IT A GO; AND WHILST I DIDN’T MAKE TENS OF THOUSENDS, I DID DO O.K. THE ORIGINAL ARTICLE IS BELOW: Make £500 or more, with just 3quid and 6 stamps. Earn money honest and fairly HOW TO TURN £3 INTO £6,000!!! OR MUCH MORE!!! IT REALLY WORKS. I found this on a bulletin board and decided to try it. A little while back, I was browsing through US and Japanese newsgroups, just like you are now in the UK ones, and came across an article similar to this that said you could make thousands of dollars within weeks with only an initial investment of £3.00! So I thought, "Yeah right, this must be a scam", but like most of us, I was curious, so I kept reading. Anyway, it said that you have to send £0.50 to each of the 6 names and addresses stated in the article. You then place your own name and address in the bottom of the list at #6, and post the article in at least 200 newsgroups. (There are thousands) No catch, that was it. So after thinking it over, and talking to few people first, I thought about trying it. I figured "what have I got to lose except 6 stamps and £3.00, right? " Then I invested the measly £3. Well GUESS WHAT! Within 7 days, I started getting money in the mail! I was shocked! I figured it would end soon; but the money just kept coming in. In my first week, I made about £30.oo. By the end of the second week I had made a total of over £900.oo. In the third week I had over £3,000.oo and it' s still growing. This is now my fourth week and I have made a total of just over £15,000.oo and it's still coming in rapidly. It's certainly worth £3.00, and 6 stamps. Let me tell you how this works and most importantly, why it works. Also make sure you print a copy of this article NOW, so you can get the information off of it as you need it. I promise you that if you follow the directions exactly, that you will start making more money than you thought possible by doing something easy! Suggestion: Read this entire message carefully! (Print it out or download it.) Follow the simple directions and watch the money come in! It's easy. It's legal. And, your investment is only £3.00(Plus postage). IMPORTANT: This is not a rip-off; it is not indecent; it is not illegal; and it is virtually no risk - it really works!!!! If all of the following instructions are adhered to, you will receive extraordinary dividends. PLEASE NOTE: Please follow these directions Exactly, and £10,000 or more can be yours in 20 to 60 days. This program remains successful because of the honesty and integrity of the participants. Please continue its success by carefully adhering to the instructions. You will now become part of the Mail Ordering business. In this business your product is not solid and tangible; it's a service. You are in the business of developing Mailing Lists. Many large corporations are happy to pay big bucks for quality lists. However, the money made from the mailing list is secondary income, which is made from people like you and me asking to be included in that list. Here are the 4 easy steps to success: STEP 1:Get 6 separate pieces of paper and write the following on each piece of paper: "PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST. "Now get 6 UK £0.50 coins and tape ONE to EACH of the 6 pieces of paper. So the coin will not break through the envelope. Next, place one paper in each of the 6 envelopes and seal them, MAKE SURE THAT THERE ARE ENOUGH STAMPS ON YOUR ENVELOPES (£0.16 pence stamps should cover it for second class and keep your costs even lower). You should now have 6 sealed envelopes, each with a piece of paper stating the above phrase, your name and address, and a £0.50 coin. What you are doing is creating a service. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY LEGAL! You are requesting a legitimate service and you are paying for it! Like most of us I was a little sceptical and a little worried about the legal aspects of it all. So I checked it out with the UK Post Office (0845-722-3344) and they confirmed that it is indeed legal! Mail the six envelopes to the following addresses: No.1 J McOwen, 104 Prunier Drive, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire AB42 1ZH No.2 A.smith, 33 torquay rd, Newton abbot, Devon, TQ12 2LW No.3 R.Koc , 17A Norwich Rd ,Wisbech ,Cambs ,PE13 2AD No.4 G Carroll, 5 Swallow Fold, Lower Grange, Bradford BD8 0NR No.5 D.Taylor, 3 regent Crescent, Skipton, North Yorkshire, BD23 1BG No.6 E.Garwe, 78 Bayswater road, Harehills, Leeds, LS8 5NW STEP 2: Now take the number 1 name off the list that you see above, move the others up 1. (6 becomes 5, 5 becomes 4, etc.) And add YOUR name as number 6 on the list. STEP 3: Change anything you need to, but try to keep this article as close to original as possible. Now, post your amended article to at least 200 newsgroups. (I think there are close to 34,000 groups). All you need is 200, but remember, the more you post, the more money you make! : ** EVERYBODY AROUND THE WORLD CAN DO IT, BUT REMEMBER TO PUT ENOUGH STAMPS ON YOUR ENVELOPES. This is perfectly legal! If you have any doubts, refer to Title18 Sec. 1302 & 1341 of the Postal lottery laws. Keep a copy of these steps for yourself and, whenever you need money, you can use it again, and again. PLEASE REMEMBER that this program remains successful because of the honesty and integrity of the participants and by their carefully adhering to the directions. Look at it this way. If you are of integrity, the program will continue and the money that so many others have received will come your way. NOTE: You may want to retain every name and addresses sent to you, either on a computer or hard copy and keep the notes people send you. This VERIFIES that you are truly providing a service. (Also, it might be a good idea to wrap the £0.50 coin in a dark paper to reduce the risk of mail theft.) So, as each post is downloaded and the directions followed carefully, six members will be reimbursed for their participation as a List Developer with Fifty pence each. Your name will move up the list geometrically so that when your name reaches the #1 position you will be receiving thousands of Pounds in CASH!!!! What an opportunity for only £3.oo SEND it now; remember to add your own name to the list and you're in business!!!! DIRECTIONS FOR HOW TO POST TO NEWSGROUPS STEP 1) You do not need to re-type this entire letter to do your own posting. Simply put your cursor to the bottom of this document, and select 'copy from the edit menu. This will copy the entire letter into the computer's memory. STEP 2) Open a blank 'notepad' file and place your cursor at the top of the blank page. From the 'edit' menu select 'paste'. This will paste a copy of the letter into notepad so that you can add your name to the list. STEP 3) Save your new notepad file as a .txt. file. If you want to do your postings in different settings, you always have this file to go back to. STEP 4) Use Netscape or Internet Explorer and try searching for various news groups (on-line forums, message boards, chat sites, discussions.) STEP 5) Visit these message boards and post this article as a new message by highlighting the text of this letter and select paste from the edit menu. Fill in the Subject, this will be the header that everyone sees as they scroll through the list of postings in a particular group, click the post message button. You're done with your first one! Congratulations...THAT'S IT! All you have to do is jump to different newsgroups and post away, after you get the hang of it, it will take about 30 seconds for each newsgroup! You will begin receiving money from around the world within days!.** Now the WHY part: Out of 200 postings, say you receive only 10 replies (a very low example of 5%). So then you make £5.00 with your name at #6 on the letter. Now, each of the 10 persons who just sent you £0.50 make the MINIMUM 200 postings, each with your name at #5 and only 10 persons respond to each of the original 10, that is another £50.00 for you, now those 100 each make a MINIMUM 200 with your name at #4 and only receive 10 replies each, you will make an additional £500.00!! OK, now here is the fun part, each of those 1000 persons post a MINIMUM 200 letters with your name at #3 and they each only receive 10 replies, that just made you £5,000.00!!!! Those 10,000 persons will all deliver this message to 200 newsgroups with your name at #2 and if still 10 people per 200 newsgroups react, you will receive £50,000.00! if you half the response by the time your name gets to number 1 in the list or worst case scenario. you halve that again! (Only 2.5 responses per newsgroup) you are still due £125,000.00 in the post. With an original investment of only £3.oo! AMAZING!!!! If you think this one is good.. by then you will be an experienced winner. The thing to remember is: do you realize that thousands of people all over the world are joining the Internet (over 16 Million in the UK alone) and reading these articles everyday? JUST LIKE YOU are now!! So can you afford £3.00 and see if it really works? I think so... People have said, "what if the plan is played out and no one sends you the money? So what!!!! What are the chances of that happening when there are tons of new honest users and newsgroups everyday and are willing to give it a try? Estimates are at 20,000 to 50,000 users everyday, with thousands of those joining the actual Internet. Remember, play FAIRLY and HONESTLY and this will really work. GOODLUCK in YOUR NEW BUSINESS!!!!!!!!! How to turn £3 into £6,000! Or more!!!! Do it!!!! Mr Shortsea Nr Clare UK Can you really tell me that you are getting worried about the plane noise. I live under the planes now, they turn round while queing and it's not bad at all. From Clare they will be high enough not to concern you at all. Keep up with this CLOSED MINDNESS and Clare will die. But I wish talk on the projects, not on the dolls... MASTEC is a multidisciplinary research programme focusing on marine biofouling (biological growth) and its effects on marine transportation. The purpose of MASTEC is to develope environmentally acceptable antifouling products, substituting the methods currently in use. Today's market is dominated by coatings containing heavy metals which is accumulated in the marine environment. Antifoulants aim at a reduction of biofouling, as layers of biological growth on ships and boats increases resistance considerably, resulting in significant increases in fuel costs. Leading scientists at Goetheburg uni och Chalmers technical hihgschool are working together in MASTEC. Important departments are General and Marine Microbiology and Marine Ecology at GU and Marine Technology at Chalmers. Field studies are conducted at Tjärnö Marine Biological Laboratory by the Skagerrak coast north of Göteborg. The programme is financed by the Swedish Foundation of Strategic Research and the universities. In MASTEC the problem of marine biofouling is addressed from many different perspectives. The goal is to understand the marine biofouling process in order to disturb and break the fouling sequence. Microbial growth and biofilms on marine surfaces are studied. Factors controlling the adhesion and growth of larger organisms, macrofouling, are analysed, and in biohydrodynamic investigations this is done with respect to its effect on resistance and speed. We study biosurfaces resulting from different polymer coatings tested in the marine environment. Furthermore, biocorrosion and the connection between growth, hull maintenance and corrosion is another field of investigation. Every doctoral student in the programme has a supervisor and an assistant supervisor, located at integrated MASTEC laboratories. In the MASTEC Graduate School the students, teachers and supervisors work in twinning -projects. The programme actively cooperates with companies and government agencies, in SvekJa Kingdom and internationally, in order to further the MASTEC goal - environmentally acceptable and economically efficient antifouling. - You know only the official info page of this bridge... - What does "bridge" means? - .......................... If you every need help with stuff you can contact me via clare-uk.com anytime! Hope you all do well at school, remember... you will not be there forever!! All the best from Mr Bryant. Paul Cooper Clare UK Clare World Music Festival - £12 concessionary tickets are now on sale at Ship Stores, Cornflowers and Direct Market Services in the High St. These will be available until mid-may and then tickets will be £15 - still no increase in this our 6th year. Remember we sold out last year so get yours early. Everything else is coming along fine so all of us in the committee look forward to seeign you there. Paul Cooper Clare UK To answer ANON on April 1- sorry about the delay - Worx FM's return is truly by popular demand. We can choose from hundreds of great bands, and have again this year, but they will be bringing an all new horns section, and playinhg stuff from their latest CD if that helps. As you know, we try to get all types of music each year. Still we are also listening, so everyone - is there anyone else you want you see again next year - 2004, or do you want all new? Paul Cooper Clare UK To also answer ANON re Paul & Stewart, firstly there were two Paul's anyway but I'll leave that. The existing committee consists of 7 people who are all working very hard to bring you, and 2499 other people great music every year. As each has a different job you see some more than others. It is a very tough and time consuming job, and every one of us are volunteers, and do all this for no money. Why don't you help by joining us - we really do need another group of people prepared to take on some of the work - anyone - come and help us. By the end of this, our 6th show, we are all going to be very tired, so how about others helping to organise it next year please, or it may just not happen. Gemma k Stoke By Clare UK hi damn back to school on tuesday Anon Clare UK Thanks Paul for that RE Worx-FM. You are tight they are good, and as Clare likes then, why not. Anon Clare UK Sorry, your not tight, you are right. Anonymous Clare UK I meant you. It seams to mean that the festival is again asking for money. Why can you re-invest the money made from last year back into it and not keep pestering us shop keepers. By now, as last year you sold out, you should be able to fully pay for the festival. Please lets see the festival become a community organisation. S-K-8 clare skatepark project Clare UK Wednesday 28th may Skatepark exhibition at Youth Club, 6.30-8.30pm. Please come along and see our plans, children, parents, concerned, all welcome Paul Cooper Clare UK I see that yet again we have to educate Anon, hiding again under the cloak of anonymity, rather than get on with the important work of running the festival. My apologies for the length of reply, but it's been building up. I would have to say though - why not just come straight to one of us and we'll help straighten you out a bit. OK, here goes. Firstly the festival has never made money and probably never will. It takes around £55000 to run this now, and, as we are restricted to 2500 people, it doesn't make it at the current ticket price, even if we are full with fully paying people, which never have been. We always have to raise at least £25000 in sponsorship, and so far never have despite excellent contributions from such super sponsors as Speedy, IFF, Nethergate and Canon Avent. Local sponsorship for traders etc IS the diffence between holding it or not - it's that important. In 2001, after 12 solid months of hard work, the festival showed a £47 "profit", but this was after us having to work even harder by running a fund raising concert in the town hall. In 2002, we did better -the festival lost £2000, but as we held 4(!!) concerts in the town hall, we made a surplus, which we then gave to the football club and other good causes, holding a small amount forward for this year. This year, so far, major sponsorship is down, and costs are up. Hence if people want a festival, and on our evidence everyone except you does, then it's some small help from as many local businesses as possible or higher ticket prices for all. [ALL financials of CWMF are in the public domain and audited by a local accountancy firm - you only have to ask for a copy]. Secondly, we ARE a community organisation for goodness sake!! How many more times to we have to tell you before it sinks in. I'll say it one more time - not one penny goes to the people working on the committee and if I hear this one any more I'll scream, and anyway it's insulting. All of the committee volunteers, of which we don't have anywhere near enough, put in hundreds of hours a year to put the festival and subsidiary events on for you. Why not join the committee, help out with all the work, and then try to get paid for it! Not a chance. Luckily this is recognised by most people who bother to care and so there are lots of thankyou's, but it can also seem a thankless task when one reads these sorts of emails. However, to fully make the point - I am happy to make this offer (though I would need to agree it with my fellow committee members)- ANY other community association in Clare can take over the festival next year and beyond with our compliments - just ask us and we will give it to them. I'd like to sit in the audience for once and enjoy the show. Thirdly, some of the biggest supporters of the festival anyway are the local traders - last year over half of them contributed in some way to our efforts, not just with money, but with everything from prizes for raffles to significant donations. To date all bar 7 shops in the town regularly put up our posters - should I assume Anon is one of the 7 (?!)- had leaflets and flyers on display, help sell tickets, come on the day, and acknowledge the increase of business that this provides etc etc. It may not be of great importance, but I and my family (and I know some other committee members too)go out of our way to patronise those businesses that support the festival. It may be a small thank you back, but an important gesture from us nevertheless. Look it's very simple. As Anon is pretty likely to be a local trader, all you have to do is not send us any donation. We don't keep badgering you. We don't name and shame. We only look to the positive. We DO promote those who contribute, we try to give them maximum publicity, we list them on flyers and mention them in interviews etc, and we try to demonstrate our gratefulness. But this is us saying thank you on behalf of the people who go to the festival, not because of anything we get out if it - OK? Get it?? This is called altruism, and is not an unlimited quality, even within a CWMF committee member's heart. David Fuller Cottenham UK Every household, village, town, has had their own ghost stories to tell. We at Cambridge Paranormal Society would like to hear these stories, past or present. Also we are always on the look out for places to investigate, to prove or disprove the existance of spirit energies. We are a volunteer organization, and our services are totally free. The ANON Clare UK Interesting to see Paul's reply. Of course he is right, he does work hard. If the amount of words coming from you represents the amount of work you do for the festival, then how do you ever get a chance to do your real work. Come on, please do not tell me the heart ache story. You all do this for a reason, and I can't believe anymore it's for Clare's interest. jez UK I am intrigued...why is 'anon' now calling him/her self 'THE' anon. are you really that embarrassed about your point of view? why hide behind 'anon'? Paul Cooper Clare UK Tell you what "The Anon". Why not join the committee and see it from the inside. If I'm right we get loads of free work from you, to the good of the community. If you're right you get to share in the ill gotten spoils. Deal? Michael Hunt Clare UK Jex, why are you hiding your name, with your views like Anon, you should let others know you. Or are you another ANON, or even ANON. Go for it festival, but should you rise to this sort of banter, as long as you produce the goods, who cares susan Clare UK I love to visit clare. Wish I could do so more often, as I have got family who live there. Paul Cooper Clare UK Thanks Michael H . I tend to think that at least Jex is on our side but there you go! The reason I rise to it, is that I'm fed up with the comments. This is damned hard work for, apparently no return so don't hold your breath for 2004!! Stewart Sample Clare UK interesting load of stuff goin thru' this messageboard regarding the festival. And having read it all, I find it hard to resist the temptation to put in my twopenn'orth. CWMF is probably the third biggest music festival in East Anglia. The larger ones are sponsored by and constructed by Suffolk County Council, Borough Council, and others;run by salaried full time council employees, and financially underpinned by the Council (although they do get some sponsorship from businesses - but hey - these uys have time to chase these things up! and they are paid to do it) What happens at CWMF is all done by people who give their time for nothing, and generally use their holidays to work for it. We're getting tired, guys, and we need support and help to continue. Help can be given in various ways: physical work; a cheque for £100; making sure that you bring a big party of good friends to the fest; and just generally talking the thing up a bit. This year is bigger than ever as you may know from our publicity stuff. It's also twice the work, and the effort is being shouldered by a very small committee. Residents of Clare: are there more of you out there who will help us? love and respect to all Michael Hunt Clare UK Paul and Stuart, don'r rise to the banter. The festival is good, not sure you have over cooked it this year with a bigger festival, but you will only find out if you try these things. Good Luck, and people, support these guy's. We are there to talk about all aspects of Railways, modelling, preservation etc. and have the long term aim of rebuilding a section of the Stour Valler Railway near to Clare and Cavendish so that we can operate a Victorian style railway using our Great Eastern Carriages which we are restoring in our workshops now. We have on first class four compartment four wheeler built in 1884 nearing completion after which we will be restoring two five compartment thirds. The next carriage to be rebuiklt will be a TBY Brake third, this will give us sufficient carriages to form a genuine Victorian train which will give pleaseure to many people for many years to come. YES THE FESTIVAL IS ON, and NEARLY UPON US!Bands are all booked, and paid for,and ticket sales as of this morning were 876, which is around 250 higher than this time last year. In 2002 we did sell out during the evening, so I can only suggest to people, and certainly local people, to get yours now from Ship Stores, Cornflowers or DMS in the High St. Also thanks to all of those local businesses who have again given their support this year, but we are still in desperate need of support from you all. Also if ANYONE would be prepared to help on the day, on the gate or whatever, or in setting up or taking down, please contact any of the committee - there's a lot to be done. As you may be aware this post has been vacant for some time since Ray Bareham retired. Concerns were growing about the future of the Town Hall if this post had continued to be vacant as it is vital to the smooth running of the hall and it’s availability to the people and organisations of Clare and other outside organisations who use it on occasions. The new caretaker, Neil Moroney who is a Clare resident will be taking over this role from 1st July. Anon Clare UK For a community event, where is the community spirit in the festival. The festival would have more backing from clare residents if two people left and allowed others to join. They are two control freaks who want the publicity, but none of the work. Watch them on the big day. You'll need a shepards hook to pull Paul off the stage. stewart sample Clare UK the festivalbods are not quiet. Also, where the hell did you get the bands. Better take the word 'WORLD' out of the title from now on. There was a severe lack of identity to what music etc there was. Michael Hunt Clare UK Okay folks, whats going on here, I didn't want to say this until I heard it first hand, but FESTIVAL chappies, are you Mad????? What was with the craft stalls, if I ran the Priory Craft Fair I would be mad as you seem to be now in direct competition. sue Clare UK sorry no message, but I am interested in having a look at the messageboard & did not know how else to access it!! stewart Sample Clare UK OK guys. Couple of comments about the fest there which are worth adressing. Cramped: compared to other festivals it was spacious; nevertheless we are looking at ways of improving the amount of space. For political reasons I will not state what is standing in our way, but the savants among you will understand. Second: WORLD: well, we had a band from Japan, another from Ghana, and a reggae outfit. How world do you want to get? For next year we are already in negotiation with a band from Latvia. However it should be fairly obvious that we have to include a bit of R&B and a bit of pop because we try to appeal to a wide audience. Just as an aside it's worth stating that all the bands on stage 2 played for free just to get exposure in front of the people of Clare and surrounding areas. In some ways that can be seen as a tribute to the enduring success of the event. And what's with all this 'anon' business anyway? What is there to hide? stewart Sample Clare UK Also, competion re the craft fair. We have received representations fron those guys and we are trying to establish next year's date. It's not really all that straightforward and there are things to negotiate. It will be no suprise however to know that many visitors to the fest enjoyed a 'retail break' during the day and guess where they went. dee braham watford UK hallo im the lost mare of suffolk Broadband in Clare Clare UK As you are all probably aware broadband is not available in clare :( please could you all register your interest on the BT site and do as much as you can do help clare move into the 21st cetnury?!?! i hope some council members read this because something needs to be done Parish Clerk, Clare Clare UK In response to the question about Broadband the Parish Council have spent time considering this and have explored several avenues to get Broadband in Clare. We have been before and enjoyed the food and service, however on this occasion a meal of roast pork and a tuna jacket potato took over an hour to reach us which by that time we had lost our appetite. we didnt say anything or complain because we didnt want to make an issue out of it so we payed and left. Max New York USA Had what should have been a plesant visit to Clare ruined by an abusive local in a siver BMW using four letter words and very hurtful remarks regarding my color when I asked him to drive with more consideration. will never visit Clare again very sad but if this is the atitude to visiters I will also not be able to recomend your town to others. Anonymous Clare UK Dear Max, So sorry to hear you had such a bad experience, we really are a very friendly bunch for the most part, unfortunately there will always be one or two individuals that let the rest of us down, Please don't tar us all with the same brush as this one lout. ? Clare UK 3 letters are all I need to to explain that person B M W. Arrogant beggars! Don't worry about 'em mate. You're welcome in Clare anytime. Webmaster Clare UK Dear Max, we at clare-uk.com are very sorry to hear what happened to you while visiting Clare. I can only hope that the bigot you had the misfortune to meet was NOT a local of our town. I am sure that I speak for the huge majority of people in Clare who are very friendly and welcome visitors from all over the world. I myself regard Americans as our closest cousins and any disrespect shown to you by this one individual is personally disrespectful to me as well. Unfortunately, this type of person has infected cities, towns and villages all over the world spreading their prejudiced, intolerant behaviour far and wide. Again I hope I speak for the vast majority of the people in Clare when I say that this type of person is NOT WELCOME in our town. I truly understand how disappointed you were at meeting such a sickening individual but please rest assured that you are very welcome to come back and visit us again. If you would like to contact me prior to any such visit, I will personally ensure that you receive the best possible service, hospitality and friendly welcome that is normally associated with Clare. webmaster@clare-uk.com ? Clare UK Well said mate! Dave Clare UK While I agree that it is very unfortunate that a visitor to Clare was offended. I find it very offensive that I am classed as an arrogant idiot for driving a BMW is this not as bad ? especially when you consider that the person that leaving this comment has not even got the guts to post their name. Perhaps I am to assume from this comment that all the BMW driving residents or visitors to Clare are not welcome here! Is it just BMWs or would this person like to post any other dislikes that they do not welcome in a visitor or resident of Clare. Webmaster Clare UK Hi Dave...judging by his exclamation mark in Mr Anonymous’s comment below, I think he was merely remarking on the stereotypical view that is comically portrayed about BMW drivers. I do not think his comment was a serious condemnation of all BMW drivers, rather it was just an observational opinion that the person who was so rude and abusive to Max, fell into that BMW parody. For the record, all drivers are welcome in Clare......even BMW’s. lynda garside sutton surrey UK what a beautiful place Clare is I was luck enough to visit early this year. Local bod Used to be in Clare UK Dave, looks like you may have the wrong end of the stick. The fact that Max has mentioned the colour of the car means that he is trying to aim the message at the person who was responsible for the offence. Not at all BMW drivers. As far as I am concerned, Max was lucky to get away with what he did on the day as my view of Clare is that it is not open to anyone outside and of other origin. In fact there is a small group of people who try their best to destroy what forward thinking and devoplment of Clare that goes on. Your biting of Max's comments just show's Clare's lack of understanding out the real world. Lee Wotton Clare UK Hi, Great Website! Can anyone give me a contact for a youth football club in Clare? We've just moved to the area and I'm looking for a club for my 8 year old son. many thanks, Lee John Clare UK RE MARCH PLACE ARMED INCEDENT I am very concerned about the activities of this fellow resident of Clare or rather some one who uses Clare as a place of residence when it suits him. Over the past year I have noticed that although this young man does not appear to work he seems to spend money like water with equipment being delivered regularly as well as a string of posh cars and big motor bikes coming and going. Recently at least THIRTY POLICE OFFICERS including ARMED POLICE sat out side this individuals house for most of the night, I have been reliably informed that he was armed and refused to vacate the house for eight hours, causing considerable stress to many residents of March place. The police appeared to be scared of him and waited until he decided to come out. When he did he showed no fear and appeared to be in control of the whole situation even asking the name of the dog the police had with them. The police will not tell me what they were looking for and did not charge him with anything although apparently they found huge amounts of money in bank accounts and bonds. I have asked him were he gets his money from and he refused to tell me after I pushed the point he was very rude and asked me to leave, which I think proves that he has something to hide. His girlfriend has been over heard telling a neighbor that he has connections in Russia he has also had foreigners staying at the house. I have also found out that he comes from the Bristol area, that his parents own one of the big houses on Stoke road and that he owns a lot of properties around the area. He has a pick up truck parked on his drive which never moves with no tax on it which just goes to show his total lack of respect for the law. If any one has any information about this person please post or email me directly his name he is between 28 and 32 years old, he is driving a yellow BMW although he does not keep this car at March Place, the only cars that do not change are a blue Rover and a silver bmw (ring any bells) Please help if we stick together we can get rid of people like this even if the police will not. sarah Clare UK CCA are pleased to introduce the SKA covers band SUPATONES on Friday 28th Jan in the town hall, tickets are £10.00 from shipstores. My Great grandmother was born in Sudbury so it was my intension to visit that town for the first time in my 55 yr life. I got lost and ended up in your delightfull village of Clare. I had the good fortune to ask a lady just about to go into No 37 Nethergate St, for some information. She took time to search out a copy of your "Clare, the place the people" booklet that she gave to me. She also told me about buildings close by. Can I please use your Guest book to thank her for being such an excellent ambassador for your fantastic village. I am glad I got lost. I have posted twice in the last two week and both of which have been deleted after a few days, I have noticed that all negative posts go the same way whilst posititive posts are left on for ever. This site needs to take a good look at its self as I belive that by doing this it is giving a false impression of Clare to visiters. I expect this post will be deleted soon but I thought that I should point this out. Look forward to much awaited debate. Thomo The Wheatbelt Western Australia Since the guest book is not up and running on the 'Haverhill-U.K.' web site, I'll try this one instead. I am originally from 'Cambridge Way ' in Haverhill, but migrated to "upside down land" in 1972, and been here ever since, nor have I been back to U.K.I used to go horse riding as a kid at 'Stoke-by-Clare'and also attended 'Cangle Primary School', nice to see it's still standing.Does anybody know anything about 'Boyden Hall' in 'Wratting Rd. Haverhill, there is no reference to it on the Haverhill web site?My brother is seeking info on it .On ya!! The Voice Of Reason Clare UK So it’s that time of year again when Clare is supposedly exited about the music festival, or to put it another way some unheard of or past it performers making a lot of noise and disturbing the peace and quite clogging up the town and leaving mess every where, while yobs treat the whole event as a drinking competition. I can’t help thinking that if anyone else was to put an event like this on in Clare that it would be reported. Let’s face it the Pubs have a hard job putting on music and the town hall has a meter to monitor the noise levels in case and God forbid someone was to make a noise whilst enjoying them selves. The Voice Of Reason Clare UK Has any one noticed the state of the roads on Clare Heights? A lot of them seem to be breaking up or subsiding, Hartford road has groves forming in places and regularly has pot holes appear, the council do from time to time send a truck and shovel some tarmac into the holes but this does not fix the underlying problem. This is becoming a danger for those of us who enjoy a trip on our motor bikes or push bikes and especially for the children who enjoy riding there bikes around, I have regularly suffered from tramping whilst riding my motor bike, and would imagine that on a less powerful machine or a push bike it would be very easy to be pushed to the wrong side of the road in to the path of on coming traffic The Voice Of Reason Clare UK Groups of teenagers out side the co-op What’s the problem “kids” have always hung around in groups one minute people are complaining that these “kids” site in front of the TV or PC all day then the minute they go out the same people complain, If they are mugging people then stop them but I don’t believe that they are on several occasions I have been spoken to by teen ages about what ever car I am driving or asked about my dog if walking by. I can remember my self hanging around a bus shelter with my friends when I was this age and then with mopeds and finally with cars until in the end other things take over and the next generation take over. The standard excuses of there is nothing to do are always quoted but in reality they just enjoy being together. So leave the kids alone for once unless it is genuine(SEE MY NEXT POST) Clare Resident Clare UK Although I am in favour of progress and quite partial to a curry myself, is it not the greatest insult to Mr Pedder to agree for an Indian Restaurant to be run from his shop premises. Mr Pedder was a long-standing critic of having an Indian Restaurant in Clare and voiced his opinion against it on many occasions. It would appear that now the poor man has passed away, a 'window of opportunity' has been seized by Parish Councillors and St Edmundsbury Planning Department alike. Well, I hope you can all sleep well at night as to agree for an Indian Restaurant to be established in Clare is one thing....but to allow Mr Pedder's own premises to be converted into it is another thing altogether. Why don't you just spit on the man's grave? I never knew he was disliked so much by the local authorities??? Jonathan williams Deganwy UK Thank you for such an informative and well organised site. Reading as a former resident of the town it brought a lump in my throat to see how the town has progressed especially in the unique community spirit, I think a lot of towns should look to Clare for inspiration, you are a credit to the County. I am happy to see that the place hasn't changed too much. In my day it was the erection of large lanterns outside the Swan, now it seems it's signage instead, not a lot has changed. Happy Days. Clare York UK i share my name with your wonderful town!!! Ana York UK i have a friend who shares her name with your wonderful town!!! Webmaster Clare UK Thank you Ana, Clare and Jonathon for your recent postings, it's great to hear from you! Webmaster Clare UK Does anyone have the telephone number for a local Bee Keeper called Albi Pinion? Thanks...Webmaster Anonymous Clare 00-United_Kingdom Please, someone, tell me .... why is the co-op so appalling? The freezers and chillers are continually failing and, on the rare occasion that they are working and are fully stocked - what assurance do we have that they are maintaining the correct temparature. For me and my family's own safety, I have stopped buying any meat or chilled products from the store. In fact, I am very tempted to stop shopping there completely. Please 'Mr Co-op', get some proper, qualified management in place to guide your team of young (!) workers and get your store up to the standards we deserve .... before Environmental Health close it down. The Voice of Reason Clare UK RE CO-OP I could not agree more as a rule the standards are disgusting, while it is possible that the freezers breaking down are beyond the control of the management, the standard of service is terrible and is not. A couple of weeks ago I asked a young member of staff for an item after three attempts I managed to drag her away from her conversation with here ”mate” and as to my enquirers she replied “don’t know” and walked away! All I wanted to know was if they stocked coconut milk. I think most people have similar tale to tell . How ever there is one ray of light in an older gent who is working there who will bend over backwards to help and nothing seems like to much trouble for him, lets hope it rubs off on to some of the others, but some how I doubt it! Matthew Shinn Latchingdon UK We ae thinking of moving to Clare - does anyone have any advice, do's or do nots? We are looking for a family house around £250000... Anonymous Clare UK Re: Co op While I agreed with the comments posted about the atrocious standards in the co op, I feel that the staff in there are very good on the whole, considering the leadership the young staff in there get. Quite honestly with the working conditions they have to endure I am suprised they have any staff at all, they are working the youngsters (many still at school) excessive hours in tempratures which must breach health and safely regulations The Voice Of Reason Clare UK The Clare World Music Event So we are about to be told from the Focus and the Clare web site what a great success the music festival was, how can I say this? Easy it happens every year it does not matter if it was or not. The problem is that the truth is that some years it has made a loss it costs a fortune in clearing up after wards, replacing the floral displays that are wrecked and policing the event. I think the fact that a completely unmotivated attack on a young man on Stoke Road proves this point. I have asked the police to supply me the crime figures for the weekend but they said they have not collated them yet, so their must be quite a few. Do you realise that the focus and the music festival are linked by committee members? Also that one of the parish councillors used to spend a lot of time complaining to any one that would listen about it (this was before becoming a member of the parish council) When a few years back my tubs were trashed after the festival I was offered free tickets for the next one to “go away” We are told that the festival benefits the community how? For instance how much has been given to local funds, perhaps a annual fund raising day would be a good replacement for this joke of an event and to top it all someone thought it would be a good idea to put it on a sale day! s sample sudbury UK I note with dismay that the self-styled 'voice of reason' is once more gracing our screens with the incoherent, spittle-flecked rants that we have come to expect. Maybe anonymity is what is required when views are founded in negativity. But, then again, maybe not so anonymous...tubs got trashed??..can't be many of them. Anonymous Clare 00-United_Kingdom An article appeared recently on the back page of Clare focus magazine, entitled TYRE HORROR; regarding nails being placed under car tyres in Market Square. This has been going on for many years. It occurs outside one shop in particular. It is common knowledge locally who is responsible. I find this matter deeply troubling. My closest friend was seriously injured in a road accident when she experienced a tyre bursting on a fast stretch of road in Camarthen causing her car to roll over. The tyre had been slowly degrading due to a slow puncture. Although this was not related to incidents on Market Square it shows just how dangerous punctures can be. Several people have reported their experiences of nails being placed under their tyres to the Police, However others have not. If the Police are not informed of what is going on they cannot act. It won’t be long before someone gets badly injured or worse killed because of this man’s actions. I urge everyone who has seen this person interfering with cars to report their finding to police. Concerned Clare. Please feel free to reply via E-mail to me. The Voice of Reason Clare UK So Stewart you’re calling me incoherent? I think I could call you a lot worse! Why not reply to the points raised? Perhaps I should ask about burning down some ones house by using a blow lamp on a timber framed house which you were working on without public liability insurance, or may be sit in the country park drinking in the mornings or perhaps harass innocent women in the pubs of Clare or even hassle one insecure girl on the music festival committee to the extent that she has to resign. So Stewart sober up think about it and tell us all what good the music festival does for Clare. Perhaps you could also tell us when and where the accounts are available for viewing; after all they are supposed to be transparent aren’t they? In fact I have a lot of questions I would like to ask, so why not set up a music festival forum when we can ask such questions as who was responsible for the last minute cancellation of an event in the town hall as a licence application was forgotten. Also thinking about it when is your AGM? I think I might come! Sally Sudbury UK The voice of reason ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! James S Clare UK Re s sample. Are you going the address the issues or continue trying to throw weak insults? As you seemed to loose that one!! Why not act like an adult? If you read his posts they refer to major topics affecting Clare at the moment i.e. the state of the roads, the youths that hang around the co-op the co-op itself and the music festival. Perhaps if you lived in Clare you would understand that these are common topics of conversation at the moment and these are the same views as held by a lot of the Clare residents. A Fan Clare UK Well said mate this forum was ok but all of a sudden it is the talk of the town, like a lot of people I can’t wait for the next Voice of Reason post. who is He/She? Anonymous Clare - and proud of it! Do we really have to resort to personal insults on a community website. Its just down right pathetic and incredibily immature. Please note: If you are visiting this page in advance of a visit to our beautiful Suffolk town, please be assured that we aren't all nasty and vindictive
